History - Manoel Island
History of the Island. In 1570, the island was acquired by the Cathedral Chapter of Mdina and it became the property of the Bishop of Malta. It was called l'Isola del Vescovo or il-Gżira tal-Isqof in Maltese (the Bishop's Island). In 1592, a quarantine hospital known as a Lazzaretto was built after an outbreak of the plague.

MIDI plc has submitted a full planning application for the development of Manoel Island, following the approved outline permit of the revised Masterplan. Since then, the design has gone through an iterative process and this full development application has further developed the principles established in the outline permit.

The restoration of various important heritage sites on Manoel Island is an on-going process and to-date more than €20 million has been invested by MIDI in the restoration of St George’s Chapel and the majestic Fort Manoel at no cost to the Maltese people.

How much open space will there be on Manoel Island? The new Masterplan for Manoel Island boasts of 192,000sqm of open space (the equivalent to 27 football pitches), of which 175,000sqm is public open space.

Open Day at Fort Manoel - Manoel Island
Apr 19, 2022 · After two years of COVID restrictions, the magnificent Fort Manoel will be opening its doors again to the public during an Open Day on Sunday, 1 st May between 0900hrs and 1800hrs. This will give the public an opportunity to view the restoration works to date and enjoy the Fort and all it has to offer.
